General information
The Sala d’Art Jove is an art space run by the Direcció General de Joventut (Directorate General of Youth) in the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) whose purpose is to encourage creative work by young people and promote emerging art. It provides an environment for artistic experimentation and research together with a range of education options addressed to artists, students and the public at large.
The Sala d’Art Jove holds regular seasons of exhibitions and activities, all of them designed jointly by the various artists and cultural producers concerned. It also runs a range of activities in other locations around Catalonia, partners various organizations and schools and regularly collaborates with creative centres Hangar and Can Xalant.
Every year the Sala d'Art Jove runs a call for applications in order to choose the projects that are to feature at the facility. The call is for artistic creation proposals and it also seeks to promote projects in research, publishing and education in art.
Exhibitions
The exhibitions at the Sala d'Art Jove feature visual arts projects created by artists and cultural producers living in Catalonia. These projects are selected each year in the public ‘Art Jove’ (Young Art) call for applications.
The exhibitions are the outcome of processes for collaboration and working together that are organized through the Sala d’Art Jove’s "tutoring processes". As part of the work dynamics at the Sala d’Art Jove, the artists selected in the call for applications join a group work process that seeks to provide training, create a space conducive to the realization of their respective projects and give a collective response to meet needs in the dissemination and production of the exhibitions.
The exhibitions are therefore approached as something that will be of benefit to the training of the artists who produce them. In addition, experimental mediation processes are also organized in order to interact with the public and work with groups of visitors. The question of how to generate significant knowledge production and learning processes is at the centre of the dynamics that are structured in the exhibitions at the Sala d'Art Jove.
Activities
The Sala d'Art Jove runs a programme of activities for visual arts projects which use more flexible formats for interaction with the public. In tandem with its exhibitions and creative projects it also carries out other activities that are designed to enhance them, intensify their respective knowledge production processes and generate specific dissemination and multiplication processes.
The activities are often run in partnership with other organizations and they can also be held in different locations. As is the case with the exhibitions, planning for the activities is usually carried out as part of the tutoring processes and the group work of the agents concerned.
Art Jove call for applications
Art Jove is the Direcció General de Joventut (Directorate General of Youth) annual call for applications which seeks to promote visual arts projects and give support to young artists and cultural producers in Catalonia. The Sala d'Art Jove develops a series of dynamics through the selected projects which are designed to build a quality framework for their production and dissemination and also to further the training and professionalization of their respective producers.
Art Jove periodically updates aspects of the call for applications in order to ensure that it is always in line with the interests and work processes of young artists. To that end the Sala d'Art Jove seeks to implement strategies that encourage the development of innovative processes in the visual arts and which may be significant in the contemporary artistic context.
Art Jove currently provides for four different kinds of visual arts projects: creation, research, publishing and education. In addition there is also the Tutorial call for applications addressed to cultural agents interested in planning and implementing Sala d'Art Jove production, training, dissemination and mediation dynamics.
Education
Education in the practice of art is one of the distinguishing features of the work done at the Sala d'Art Jove. In addition to the importance attached to training within the facility, it is also one of the means used to develop innovative ways of working in artistic practice and cultural production. Education is seen not just as an opportunity for dissemination but rather as a medium for collaboration between agents, the collective knowledge production and experimentation.
In addition to the training aspect in the tutoring processes, the Sala d’Art Jove also supports experimental educational projects through its annual call for applications and carries out specific projects through which it builds partnerships between cultural producers and the artists selected in the call for applications and educators, schools and youth groups of different kinds. Over recent years a network of partnerships has been built up through the projects that have been carried out, a network that is now being consolidated and which includes secondary schools, art schools and universities in particular.
Research
Research is an essential part of artistic practice. One part of the Sala d'Art Jove’s annual call for applications is set aside for visual arts research projects as well as encouraging methodological and procedural experimentation.
While it is true that research has traditionally been seen as a preliminary step for the later development of a creative project, the framework set up by the Art Jove call for applications is viewed as an opportunity to generate production and dissemination processes for experimental knowledge by breaking down the barrier between theory and practice and activating projects that seek to build relationships and exchanges between various fields of knowledge and cultural sectors.
Publications
Sala d'Art Jove publications have a variety of purposes and follow different publishing lines. In all cases the communication media employed are structured using experimental approaches and work processes.
In the first place, there are publications related to each of the exhibitions which are made in journal format. In addition to being useful for the dissemination of content, they also facilitate the development of the specific graphic and narrative approaches that come out of the tutoring processes.
Secondly, there are also projects that are carried out as part of the publishing section of the Art Jove call for applications and which have made it possible to create a line of artists’ editions. This has made it necessary to set up joint publishing processes with other organizations and has also involved several design studies.
Finally, in the annual Art Jove catalogues there has also been a tendency to modify the narratives and representations that are usually given in such formats. The catalogues have been turned into a means for expressing ideas and organizing joint assessment procedures about work processes and the projects that are carried out during each exhibition season.
TV and radio
Journalists, students, artists, friends of the artists, film producers and directors, curators and many other people who may or may not be connected with cultural production have made film and sound recordings about Sala d’Art Jove exhibitions and activities. They range from raw recordings to making a TV news item, or carrying out research, a class project or an experimental record.
